For four days, in the Medieval Burg reconstructed, returning the everyday scenes with the feasts, the tourneys, the most vibrant images with the beautiful colours of the Renaissance; return the flavours with the medieval dinner rich of sauces and sixteenth-century recipes that season and accompany "lo casio pecorino, li fascioli có le cotiche, le tagliatelle de farro, la carne de messer lo porco, li piccioni e la faraona arrosto, lo gengiovo” (local sweet, rich of spices, expressly banned in 1573). Sunday (last July), the Judiciary municipal, the Notables, the Captains of weapons, Armigeri, the beautiful ladies evoke the largest event of the ancient history of Ponzano: the conquest of Council Liberty with historical Pageant in the streets of the old incasato.
The focal point is represented by the welcome that is bestowed to the first Podestà elected to which is delivered the key to the Castle in the jubilation of the three city quarters (St. George Castle, Crucifix) that close the commemoration with the Challenge in the Race of the Barrels to conquest the Palio.
The Palio of Barrels is a historical memory that dating back to 1570. In November 1569 the Castle of Ponzano sent to Rome as ambassador, ser Scipione Leonardi, wealthy inhabitant of Ponzano, who had the pride to enjoy relationships, we do not know if kinship or business, with family Strozzi in Florence. Ser Scipione carried with him a memorial written by exposing personally to Pope Pius V, where were remarked complaints and discontent of inhabitants of Ponzano that, depending on the jurisdiction of the town of Fermo, from this town were forced to undue payments and more were administered by incapable and arrogant Vicars. On 5th April, 1570 was drafted the Motu Proprio which sanctioned the division, the separation, the dismemberment of the Castle of Ponzano from the town of Fermo, setting free the Municipality and subjecting it directly to the Holy See.
It was forbidden to the town of Fermo, the legates and governors, for any reason, to meddle in the affairs of the Land of Ponzano and no one could in any way harass citizens in their pastures and their territory, under penalty of the disbursement of 5000 ducats, of excommunication and other penalties at the discretion of the Pope himself.
From this particular episode was inspired the historical memory "From Castle to free Municipality - 1570".
